The Borough of Matawan, located in the northwest corner of Monmouth County, is a picturesque little town just over 2 square miles in size. Situated at the head of the Matawan Creek, the Borough has a rich history as a shipping center largely due to the use of its waterways by farmers in need of a thoroughfare to the Atlantic Ocean. Its waterways also have another claim to fame—Peter Benchly’s novel, “Jaws,” was based on a series of shark attacks that occurred in 1916 near Matawan as well as in its tidal creek system about 11 miles inland.

Although now a fully-developed suburban community, present-day Matawan has succeeded in retaining its traditional, small-town atmosphere. Take a stroll through the Borough’s historic district—lined with Victorian-era homes, churches, storefronts and luncheonettes—and you’ll see what we mean.

Balmoral Arms is just minutes from what is perhaps the most popular place in town—the Aberdeen-Matawan train station. It’s the northernmost stop within Monmouth County on New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line which runs between Bay Head and New York Penn Station. With easy access to both the Jersey Shore and major metropolitan areas, Balmoral Arms is an ideal place to live.

Matawan is situated on the border of both Monmouth and Middlesex counties which puts Balmoral Arms residents in close proximity to numerous recreational, cultural and shopping opportunitites. Popular attractions in and around the area include Raceway Park in Englishtown, horse racing at Freehold Raceway and Monmouth Park Racetrack, outdoor concerts at the PNC Bank Arts Center or how about swimming in the Atlantic Ocean? Then again, staying close to home and enjoying Matawan’s own scenic parks, lakes and creeks might be all the excitement that one needs.

Are you a golfer? Middlesex County operates the 36-hole, par 71 Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick and the 18-hole, par 70 Meadows at Middlesex Golf Course in Plainsboro. Monmouth County Park offers five championship courses, two 18-hole executive courses, and a nine-hole par three course. Two of the county’s courses are ranked among the best fifty in the nation.

Holmdel Park is one of Monmouth County’s most popular locations offering tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing and skating ponds, sledding, an arboretum and a living history farm. Like to hike? The Henry Hudson Trail, which goes from Aberdeen to Atlantic Highlands, is nine miles of paved trail along a former railroad right-of way for use by walkers, bicyclists, and in-line skaters. With everything from the Sunnyside Equestrian Center in Middletown to the Monmouth Cove Marina in Port Monmouth, whatever your lifestyle, you’ll be close to everything at Balmoral Arms.
